Are There Many Roads to God?

by Sebastian R Fama

“There are many roads to God,” the speaker said. And then he proceeded to talk about all the things he liked about the many different faiths he had explored over the years. What makes this scene particularly disturbing is that the speaker was Catholic. Moreover, the event took place in a Catholic Church before a Catholic audience. Presumably, the speaker included Catholicism as one of the many roads to God. That being the case, we should hear what Jesus has to say on the subject.

In John 14:6 Jesus says: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me.” So, Jesus clearly says that He is the only way to the Father. He also said: “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:13-14). Jesus said: “the road that leads to life.” He is clearly saying there is only one road to eternal life and thus, God.

Reject the words of Jesus and you reject Jesus. And if you reject Jesus, you reject the one who sent him (Luke 10:16). And that would be God the Father. And, that is why Peter says: “There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12). It should also be noted that Jesus, as the second person of the Trinity, is God. So, if you have Jesus, you are already at your destination. All that is left in this life, is to remain in him (John 15:4-6).

Jesus gave a stern warning to those who would teach falsely: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea” (Matthew 18:6).

Finally, a caution to all those who follow Christ: “There will be false teachers among you, who will introduce destructive heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed them, bringing swift destruction on themselves … In their greed they will exploit you with fabrications, but from old their condemnation has not been idle and their destruction does not sleep” (2 Peter 2:1-3). Harsh words, but very appropriate as there are souls at stake.
